What is a Giclée?
A Giclée is a “fine art print” produced on a high quality digital printer. As high tech computer technology has advanced, so too has fine art reproduction followed. A new process of reproducing fine art using state of the art computer technology has arrived, and this product is called a “Giclée”. Giclée is a French term meaning “spray of ink”, which describes part of the process. The word is pronounced “Gee-clay”.
The accuracy, clarity, sharpness and color vibrancy of reproductions produced by the Giclée process has astounded the art world. Fine art collectors around the globe have been quick to embrace today’s modern advances in technology and it is easy to see why. It is often very difficult to distinguish the original piece of art from a Giclée reproduction!
What is an Enhanced Giclée?
This is a Giclée that has certain areas of the image (such as highlights, sky etc.) enhanced with oil paint colors by the artist to add a paint brush texture to the print. Thus giving more of an effect of an original oil painting while also increasing its value.
An additional three weeks processing is required for enhanced prints in order to allow for the oil paints to properly dry and cure before shipping.
How long does a Giclée last?
Giclées can last as long as 32-36 years easily before noticeable fading begins. It is important to note that all colors fade. Depending of the composition of the paints, many original watercolors will fade faster.
Have any museums expressed interest in Giclées?
Dozens of museums have mounted exhibitions or purchased Giclées for their permanent collections. These include The Metropolitan Museum (New York), the Guggenheim (New York), the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (Boston), the Philadelphia Museum, the Butler Institute (Youngstown, OH), the Corcoran (DC), the National Gallery for Women in the Arts (DC), the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts (DC), the Walker Art Center, the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, the New York Public Library Print Collection, the High Museum (Atlanta), the California Museum of Photography, the National Museum of Mexico and the San Jose Museum, among others.
